Cheap Removable Closet Shelving - Renter Friendly

No need for fasteners, just stack up the wood and it stays in place

In one of our first apartments (oh so many years ago), my father-in-law made shelving like this for my tiny pantry. It is SO EASY to do and is inexpensive, very durable, and easily removable making it great for renters/tenants! We are doing this in the main linen closet and the game closet.

If you have the plywood cut at the home improvement store, you won't need any tools, fasteners, nails, or glue! Brilliant!

All my pieces are uneven because we are repurposing the wood from a different closet set-up from the previous house. Otherwise, I would have them all nice and even!

Decide how many shelves you want. For each shelf, you'll need two "support legs". You want to put two pieces on the side walls and place the third piece on top (the shelf). The bottom pieces work like support legs when you press them against the walls snuggly. Then stack the next legs on top of that and add another shelf. Build as high as you want, these shouldn't fall over if you press them against the walls tightly.

The hallway is narrow, making it very difficult to get a photo of this closet. There are four shelves (and eight support legs for a total of 12 pieces). The two legs are the same dimensions, but the shelf will most likely be different.

Janniversary 2016

Light snow

Today is the one year anniversary of the first time we saw inside the house. I remember what we did that day and it's fun to remember.

A disturbing thought is how FAST one year goes by!

Game Closet Shelving

The bar provided the perfect spot to apply the Contact paper
We had some plywood from the previous house. We had put removable closet shelves in the kids' closets but we don't have the same dimensions here, so John planned to use the pieces for the game closet after shaving off a few inches with his circular saw. He really wanted the edges to be protected from the saw marks, so we decided to apply Contact paper (but I don't usually do this).

Each piece was covered with the lovely faux wood grain Contact paper

This closet will be full of games soon when there are shelves to hold all the boxes

These pieces go against the side walls and hold up the shelves,
there's no need to attach them in any way, the weight of the shelves
puts enough pressure on them that they don't fall over

Because these shelves are so long and will be holding a heavy load, we put in 2"x2" supports, but most often these "stacking shelves" don't need extra support. You can't see the side "legs" in this photo.

Once all the games (we have lots!) are tucked onto the shelves,
they will virtually become invisible

I LOVE that we did this for under $5 because we already had the wood-FREE closet shelving! We need to do this in the linen closet as well, then we'll be able to find a permanent home for the towels! Stay tuned for another exciting adventure of "Mini-Projects That Should Have Been Completed a Month Ago"!
